I set out from my home with my cousin on 14th so that I would reach IITB on 15th evening.
I didn't know where exactly to get down from train. I had a ticket from Tirur to CST. Fortunately , from Tirur station I met on of my cousin's friend, Shahansad and his friend Febin. He was also coming to IITB , he is a second year Btech student in CSE.
I could see many flooded areas near Mumbai, from the train. We got down in Thane station. From there we took an auto to IITB, Powai. The meter runs very fast here. We should have taken a local train to Kanjur Marg station and take auto from there rather than from Thane.
There is a huge traffic outside the campus. We got down in Main gate. As the campus is very large, there is bus service inside the campus. From the main gate we took a bus to Hostel-6, where all mtech students are supposed to be allocated.
The security of the hostel told us that it is late and the warden has left. He told us to sleep in the TV room. So we put our luggage in TV room. Along with us there were many other new comers in TV room. Students of IIT were watching TV till 5:30 morning. There was a mini canteen near the TV room which is also working late night. Some of us could not sleep well that night because of the sounds.

My first day in hostel

I have been in nitc hostel for 4 years. Now it is time to vacate the hostel..

I remember a few things in first day in hostel. One of them is about my room mates, how they took the positions in the room.

On the first day my mother and cousin came with me. Buying all the things needed(bucket,mug,..), and puting all the things I took from home they left me. It was for the first time I am in a hostel. One of my room mate was an MP guy(Harsh Shrivastava ). Another room mate was Dany Joseph, a mallu.

Harsh was in an angry mood that time. He was the one to come first in my room (A-311). He checked the register for verifying his room number. He saw my name 'Mohamed Hanoosh MP'. He thought how come two MP guys in same room. That's not possible. He thought his room is 313 (It was his room number during his school days). He went to 313. He was the first one to reach 313 too. He took corner bed there. Later all inmates of 313 came. Then he had to verify his number again and decided to come back to 311. At that time Dany had already taken corner bed. I had just put all my luggages on the other corner bed. He had to take the middle bed! He uttered some thing. I didn't understand. I couldn't understand what he is asking me. I was very weak in speaking English those days. Later I could make it.

Compsci farewell

Today we had our department farewell. After the welcome speech, our dear HOD Dr. Vineeth Kumar Paleri sir gave a talk. He mentioned the constraints within which the dept is working. Then faculty members gave us wishes. We had cakes and cool drinks in between these.

Some of my class mates and PG students shared their experiences in the college especially with the department. What about the converse, that is, can a change of atmosphere create some idea?

I used to sit in software lab. For some part of my project I needed to get an idea. I tried changing place. It worked. Physics says that "Every body continues in its state of rest or uniform motion until an external force acts on it". Seek a place where you can get an external force which gives momentum in +ve direction. Once the body comes in motion it will keep moving. Try not to get a deceleration. His death was also on the same date(at the age of 63). The day is called Miladi Sherif.

It was people of the period of prophet who loved him the most. No celebration is being reported on Miladi Sherif, during the days of prophet or his immediate followers. Muslims are supposed to follow routines of prohet. All the celebrations of Milad Sherif which is present in current generation has no islamic base, and all such things were simply added by some people.

The first love of a muslim should be to Allah and then to prophet. All others should come only after that.

This would be the last one also. We started at 10:00 pm on Thursday. The bus was waiting in front of the canteen. All got in. Thevara was like a bus conductor, taking the attendance. Nicol had arranged a 20l. can which helped us keeping good water which is not available in TN. Some were testing the mic, but not worked. We started celebrations with songs by JP(Jithin Prakash), machan(N Arjun Kumar) and GD(Josyula Gayathri Devi). On the way to hogenakkal the bus driver stopped many times for tea(for him).

At 3:30 am we passed the boundary check post.

At 9:54 we reached Hogenakkal(Dharmapuri district). Our juniors reached there ahead of us. As usual we are late comers. The place is not at all clean. We had 2 rooms for girls and 5(later reduced to 3) for boys. The room we got had uncleaned toilets (as we can expect outside kerala). TV was there in each room.

We had our breakfast from there. Just 2poori+tea(very little) = Rs.18 . Everyone was scolding machan for the rate of food.
At 11:43 we started 'boating'. The waterbody had 100 ft. depth. Between the river and this water body there is a small land of sand. Those who didn't have footwear had to run. Tolia's running was funny. For each 2 steps he took, he had to lift his trousers.

At 3:00 we returned we had our meals.( Rs 20). There was a goat in one of the hotel where we had our food. It remembered me the "Pathummayude adu" which keeps eating notices, papers, etc from where ever available. We tried not to drink the water available there. Some bought bottled water, soft drinks. I had a coconut.

In the evening we visited Crocodile park and Aquarium. Crocodiles look as if they were dead. A lot of spelling mistakes could be found out in almost all written things.

At 6:30 we left Hogenakkal. Tamil movie "Azhakiya Tamil makan" was played in the bus. Everyone 'became' a fan of Vijay for a short time. People took the movie so seriously that even when stopped for dinner (at 9:52pm, ghee roast + tea=Rs.25) they were discussing on the movie. When the bus stopped in a diesel pump the pump employee were also watching it while they were filling. The movie finished 'successfully'. Next movie "Hero"( Malayalam dubbing of Telugu) started. Its beginning was funny. We stopped it for sleeping purpose.

At 5:50 every one was made woke up by the song Autokkaar in full volume. The tour operator did it very well. We reached Kodaikkanal. The place was too much cold. We got rooms, had our routines, breakfast.. .

At 9:15 morning we got into bus. Mammen(Justin Mammen) scolded H(Vivek H) for being late. H tried to defend. Bus stopped at pine forest. When we returned from pine forest(10:43) H came early and scolded others(especially Mammen) for being late.

We stopped for Guna caves(we were not allowed to go the cave, as somebody had died on the way in past)(11:02), Pillar rocks(12:09), Suicide point(12:41), Coaker's walk(1:29) etc.

At 2:15 we had lunch. The food was OK but Rs. 50.00 is too much.

At 4:30 we went to lake for boating. The boats were 2,4 seated. Pedal of Mathan(Mathew robert) and Randy's(Randeep) boat malfunctioned. Pali(Shivin) and TTR(Roopesh TT) pushed their boat. Only they can do it. Nicol(Rohit R) and JP were in same boat. They didn't know how to turn the boat. But they could it reverse direction somehow. So when they had to keep the boat back, somehow they came near the setting place. They called people over there to help them to get out. Nobody helped them. They went back in reverse, somehow took around 180o turn and again came to the setting place in reverse gear.

After boating we had cycling. Each one of us were given cycle. One complete round around the lake took 30 minutes for me and S Rohit (who was the first one to finish).

In the night, fire was prepared and chicken was made ready to be cooked.Pranthan(Praveen) presided the event. We had song by GD, Renzil,Nirmal.. Then people started dancing with music. Indu ma'am from electronics danced very well. We had a hot seat event in which some of us where us questioned in many ways.

Next day. We went for trekking. We were late and could not reach the place in time and we didn't have the core part of trekking. Some of us did a commando operation. Major H lead the team.H had Ambi's gun to fight the terrorists. By 1:00 we finished all activities and started return journey.

On our return journey we stopped at Palani(6:00). Some of us visited the temple. Within 1 hour we resumed the return journey.

We had dinner from Kerala.

Foss meet @ NIT calicut

Foss (Free and Open Source Software) meet is an annual event in NIT Calicut.

I attended foss only once (when I was in 2nd year).
That was foss 2007. Kerala chief minister was supposed to be the chief guest but due to some reason he couldn't come. On the first night there was an informal talk by Kirupa Sankar. The talk was about blogging. He shared his experience with blogging and convinced us the power of blogging.
The second day started with a talk on virtualization by IBM guy. After this, there was talk on Linux kernel by IBM people. That was very technical. The content was basic and it was meant for a newbie kernel programmer. Even though I didn't know much about OS internal at that time I got interested in OS. In the night there was a talk on FOSS and how people make money out of it , by Atul Chitnis (the fattest person I have seen in my life). After the talk there was a programming contest. The contest was a night out event (as most NITians prefer to work during that time). It finished only in the morning (by 4 or 5 am).
On the next day there was a talk on broadcasting technologies by Wipro techies. Another interesting talk was Hacking evolution by Shreyas.
Many talks were going in parallel. I couldn't attend all the talks. There were three halls. One hall for kernel, and similar technical stuffs talks. Another one for hacks. The third one was too general topics.
The overall arrangements for FOSS 2007 was very good. Especially the lunch. All registered people were given a FOSS CD (containing the necessary things mentioned in various talks and other packages). A file, pen and a small note book were also given.

Last year(2008) there was no talk on technical stuffs(like kernel). So I didn't attend foss last year. Right now I am interested in hacking. Hopefully I'll attend foss 2009, which is going be to on next week.

GATE 2009

I don't want to go for higher study soon after BTech. So I didn't write GATE in third year. I planned to write it in final year. This year GATE score has only one year validity. Useless as where as my decision. I just wanted to know how the exam is and wanted to test my performance in all India level (without any preparation). I appeared for GATE this year.

Questions

This year there was a different pattern and area of questions compared to previous years ( I think this is because CS and IT are combined).

60 questions 100 marks .

First 20 for 1 mark each (-1/3 for wrong)

Last 40 for 2 mark each (-2/3 for wrong)

All are multiple choice questions.

Total time is 3 hours. As any other exam we (compsci) have enough time for thinking compared to other branches who has to do calculation

Questions were simple. More questions where from DBMS (effect of IT I think). There was no questions related to hardware or computer organization ( one or two related to pipelining and memory). Mathematics part was very simple - one simple integration as we did in 12th, conversion between bases and probability related questions. Networking was asked from a different perspective (I mean not from a computer science perspective). There was nothing related to the protocols but some deeper (or related to other topics like encryption) questions.

All over, the paper was very simple for many students. Most could be answered if we remember what we heard in the class.

Moodle (eduserver) up / down ?

We have got a moodle server as department eduserver in our college. I was the one who setup the server. In the beginning, we ran the server for a 'testing purpose' ( with a few users) for one semester (monsoon 2008). Things worked fine that semester. The people who were new to moodle were comfortable with the moodle and they enjoyed it ( I think so). So, our HOD Vineeth sir instructed more faculty to use the system for course management (As a technical institute we should use such things rather than the notice boards). No of moodle users increased. Almost all students of the CSE department have account in the moodle server. My job also increased as i have to assist the faculty for course settings and students for login problems. Anna thomas was there to get moodle presented before the faculty and setting up some accounts

Nowadays i used to get a lot of call, messages, etc from faculty and others why moodle is down. The fact is that is moodle server is rarely down. I could not find it down unless the whole UPS is discharged in the lab complex. It is always accessible from our lab (Software Systems Lab). The reason it is inaccessible anywhere else in the campus is as follows.

Some of the Optical Fiber cable coming from CNC (Campus Networking Center) to the lab complex is malfunctioning. Unfortunately those are the cables coming to top floor(where the compsci labs are located). So the whole lab complex is using one(or two ) of the cables. The CNC people made a temporary adjustment that the working cable is divided to all labs using copper wires ( which will reduce speed ). The UPS powering the switch which does the temporary arrangement has some problem. When a power failure occurs the UPS become down. The UPS belongs to electrical department. They could not rectify it! So none of the labs in the lab complex will have net connectivity that time.

Eduserver has IP 124.124.70.82. All other labs except Software systems lab has ip in 60 series. So without contacting the CNC gateway they can't connect to eduserver unless they change the netmask. That is if the connection to CNC is broken, they can't access moodle, even though it is in the same building. Fortunately our(BTech) lab has got a 70 series ip (124.124.70.116) which can contact the moodle server directly and hence it is accessible.

I am always there near the eduserver and i find it up always. Those who can't access the server will blame that server is down.

What palestine says

“Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. Used to go home for winter vacations. I goes home very late and returns very early. I didn't think of doing any project in such occasions. But summer vacations are too long. Here i remembers what i did in each vacation.

In first year of my Btech course i was very new to computer world and knew little about c++ or linux. We had a course in 2nd semester 'Introduction to computer science' by Vinod Pathari sir. It was a very good course for any newbie computer engineer. It touched almost many parts of computer science. Lot of thanks to Pathari for such a course which our juniors or seniors didn't get. In my first summer vacation i thought of studying Visual Basic and Java. I spent my summer vacation in one of my relative's home where i could have a computer in his office(what a computer engineer can do without a computer?). I could study Java and a little bit of VB in that vacation.

It was in 2nd year my father bought a comp for me. That was a beginning of a Linux life. I was interested in open source. Even though it was first time for me installing a linux, i decided to spent time in Linux. At the same time many of my friends also needed Linux and they used to call me for installing Linux. In that year i thought of doing some projects. I tried contacting 4th seniors like FMB, Sridal Menon - one of the inspiring person . He got 7th in GATE in that year and is working in Bell laboratories right now . I was interested in Operating Systems those days and asked them about it.

In that year summer vacation i decided to do some thing on Linux. I and my friend Shobith stayed in the summer vacation here for doing a project. The project was on robotics (simulation using Microsoft Robotics Studio and Visual C++). We had to design algorithms for complex functionality of the robot. The project was supported by Microsoft. They suggested a lot of such projects when they came here for a talk (personally i don't like their projects which are just for making students familiar with their tools). We had many technical difficulties in doing such a project. The simulation platform requires a high end graphics supported machine. There were other Microsoft related issues (like licences ) also. I tried doing linux stuffs in parallel to this. Finally I ended my vacation in a linux project. I created a live CD based Knoppix and Ubuntu etc. I and another friend Muneeb was interested in Linux kernel and tried writing a device driver for a LCD display. We failed in making the LCD display circuit running , but we could write the driver. Thus we could achieve our objective even though without a pleasure.

In my third year vacation, i thought of preparing for interview and start thinking of major project. Plans got changed when i got a call from Texas Instruments for internship.

Now :

Only this vacation remaining. Soon after the next sem we will be leaving the college and join the company. So this is the last vacation i can (i hope so) spend in college. I, being the Lab administrator, plans to do many things in the vacation. I have to configure the eduserver, a Linux server at new terminal room in CCC. I have to do my project work also.

Amazon interview

Amazon came to my college for placement. They have a good package and their working environment is very good. Their job profile tells familiarity with linux environment. I prepared for the placement concentrating more on linux and c++.
The day came. The talker introduced himself as he has 8(or more i don't remember) years of working experience in Microsoft R&D. That itself shows how much intelligent he is. They showed a video of amazon employees and their working environment. Good!!.
After the talk we had a written test. All questions were based on algorithms and problem solving skills . Two coding questions. The test was very simple and I expected many will answer correctly and I'll be out. I always makes mistakes in answering such questions. I lost all hope. Result will be coming on next morning. No hope at all. I went to software lab, started preparing for my major project presentation which was scheduled on that day. Unexpected can happen any time. Result came and I was selected for interview. Returned to my room arranged clothes for interview.

Next morning. Had my food. We had one more programming round in the morning. I was shortlisted for interview. My first interview was somewhat ok. Here is the summary of the interviews. 4 rounds. Questions were mainly from Algorithms and problem solving. I could give some algorithms , but they wanted optimal algos. I expected Linux questions, but nothing they asked.

Reading my resume , they saw that I am software lab admin. They asked me whether it's a part time job. That question really disappointed me.

Anyway the interviewers were very good. They understood whatever algorithm i wrote and pointed out its faults. The whole interview was a very good experience , first time i am getting these many algo questions.

Microsoft Interview

Microsoft visited our campus for placements. I also attended the placement process even though i was not prepared. For all my previous interviews I was somewhat tensed, but for MS I was not at all tensed. All my thought was what should i say if they ask about MS.
In the morning, after their ppts we had a written test. I was selected for interview!!.
My interview started. The interviewer asked me "how r u". I replied fine. In any of my earlier interviews i didn't have enough sound, but at that time i had it. Then he started asking about what all i have done, what i am doing.. . I expected many tech questions , but no such question they asked. I told him that i like Linux( basically because i use it more often in the lab and i am a lab admin). For all my seniors they asked many linux based questions also ,but none for me.
Finally they asked me why Microsoft ! I think, i could not control myself. I started telling about freedom of thought, innovation.. .
Interview finished. Another person told me that i am out. I returned to my room without any worry. When my seniors handed me administration of the server , i feared whether i alone can do it. After we(admins of 08-09) took charge, things got different. We are the first batch to have a lot of admins( 9 , do anyone know this fact). But i had to do the work of many admins. Only a very few admins did their duty as much as they can. Others didn't even think of starting learning the administration.Faculties keep on telling me the things to be done. I keep on mailing to corresponding admins and doing myself what all to be done.

I don't care whether others work or not. As an admin and as a student i have responsibilities to my department which i should do.I would like to mention the quotes by Einstein "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value".

Intern at TI

One day I got a mail from Texas Instruments telling 'why didn't u join here on the specified date'. Thus I knew that I was selected for the internship there. They extended the date for me and my friends to join. I was in confusion, should i do the intern there or prepare for the placements.

I decided to go for the intern. I went to college, obtained the necessary documents and set out with my friends. My friends were also same confusion ,except one who was waiting for a call from them. We reached Bagalore ,arranged a PG room.

We started going to TI. I was assigned to a separate team other than my friends' team. On my first day my instructor was absent so i spent almost all the time in Library. The library has got many comics along with technical books. We have a tea corner from where we can get tea. Boost, Horlicks, Tata tea, Tetly tea,Nescafe, Badam milk, Chocolate drink, Espresso, Cappucino, Tomato soup, Elaichi tea, .. Of course I can't forget the Black Lemon Tea. The cafeteria here is very good , a wide variety of quality foods available.

I had to share a cubicle with one junior employee who was in my team. The works i got were not as difficult i thought but time consuming. First one was to write the scripts needed to set the simulation environment for different chip platforms. I could finish coding very early, so got my second assignment. Develop a utility so as to monitor the use of system and keep track of who all are using the system and for how much time they are using it.

We don't have any time funda here. We have to complete our work in time, that's all. I used to come at around 8 O'clock and leave at 6 O'clock. Again in the night around 7:30 and leaves at 11,12, or 1 O'clock. Because it's better to spend time in TI rather than our rooms. We can get tea, access the net etc.

We used to roam around the Bangalore city in weekends.

On the day before my last day i had to present what all things i did here in front of my superior employees, sponsor etc, in a conference room. I could do well there compared to the presentation in my class seminars. They were keep on asking doubts and giving suggestions. All the employees there are cooperative very much. My manager was very good to me. They all gave best wishes for my 4th year and finished the presentation.

My Malappuram

    Malappuran is my district.
